Enter a magical world!
The grotte de Limousis cave is located 20 km north of Carcassonne, and is reached via a pretty road bordered by vines and scrubland…
'Enter the mountain'
On a 1 km path, 5 extraordinary rooms (Colonnes, Bal, Lac Vert, Disques, Grand Lac) and 2 lakes are there to be discovered.
The first room invites you to look up. It's roof, carved away by water, is worthy of your attention.
A bridge suspended over a limpid mirror of water will lead you to the final flourish; the 'lustre' of aragonite, 4 metres tall and 10 metres wide, with the light show catching all its beauty... a real wonder of nature!
Wine in a cave?
Coming from Minervois or Cabardès, the Améthyste vintage from the Alliance Minervois cellar is matured in oak barrels in the cave. A constant temperature, 14°, and humidity combine for optimal aging. An intense, fruity flavour, with shades of crystal and purple/blue and purple/red colouring guarantee a subtle marriage between the wood and the rock.
Good to know
- As the cave is 14°c all year round, it's a good idea to bring a thin jacket, even in summer
- Please note, the floor may be slippery
- The visit lasts 45 minutes
- You can visit independently or have a guided tour
- Shop, toilet, snack bar on site
Officially discovered in 1811, it seems that it had been used as shelter since the dawn of time, not just for people, but for cave bears 10,000 years ago. Scratch marks can still be seen on the cave walls. A century ago, the residents of Limousis used to come and dance in the salle du bal, or ballroom.
