Go with the flow and the Canal du Midi

Ideally located, from Homps you can also explore Carcassonne and the Cité (32 km), the Lézignanais (10 km) and Roman Narbonne.

This small commune, with 700 residents, lies between Corbières and Minervois, and enjoys sharing its way of life, leisure activities and wine with visitors.

Homps, little tower of Babel, where the whole world passes by, thinks, lives and breathes holidays.

In addition to sitting in the charming port watching the boats that go by, full of holidaymakers, why not hire a boat yourself … or travel along the canal on a gabarre, a traditional barge with sales... or go for a bike ride...

My best bits

  • Appreciating the gentle way of life and sunny holidays as you stroll through the Port or on a bike ride
  • Savouring the seasonal fruit and local produce at the lovely market in Olonzac (5 minutes away) every Tuesday morning
  • Tasting one of the many magnificent AOP Minervois wines in the Maison des vins du Minervois in the quay
  • Enjoy the unique experience of a boat cruise
  • Swimming in the nearby Lac de Jouarres
A short history
The Romans, the Knights Hospitaller, Paul Riquet and the canal builders, wine merchants and today pleasure cruisers from South Africa, Australia, Japan, the United States and all over Europe have made Homps a welcoming place.
The town was on the tin road in the 3rd century before Christ. On the border between the Corbières and the Minervois, Homps was a stop off point on the Roman road.
Occupied in 1530 by the Knights of Malta, Homps has retained evidence of its past. You can still see the former command of the Order of Hospitallers (1183).
An important site for the transport of wine on the Canal du Midi, the village now lives to the rhythm of the port and the pleasure cruisers.

Don't forget to visit the Maison des vins du Minervois in the port, headquarters of the famous vintage, which has a selection of the best wines, renewed each year. Here you can find out more about the skills and knowledge of the Aude winemakers, and take away a little bit of that as a souvenir.

Cross the famous blue bridge and follow the 1.7 km path to the Lac de Jouarres, where you can enjoy a quiet day. Fishing, picnic, barbecue, canoeing, sailing... take your pick.
