LES BENITIERS DE L’ALARIC

11800 FLOURE

Regarding

The strange shape of these limestone formations on Alaric dating from the early Tertiary period has given rise to their name of ‘Bénitiers’ (holy water basins). They are a geological curiosity.
Water got into the cracks, froze and then fragmented their bases, creating these shapes.
Four of the Bénitiers are listed and are all within a few metres of each other.

To access the site, take the road leading to Monze. After passing over the motorway, turn left at the end of the first bend towards the river La Bretonne. Once over the bridge, there are three possible routes. Take the one in the centre which, after a twenty-five minute climb, takes you to the Bénitiers.
