Our ideas for visits and walks when you escape to Carcassonne for a weekend, for a breath of fresh air

First day

Morning

Browse round the Saturday morning market in Carcassonne town centre, place Carnot: local and seasonal produce a-plenty!
To finish your shopping, there is the farmers' market just a few metres away, in rue de Verdun and the Halles Prosper Montagné.

Fancy trying something different? Create your very own bookmark or card on marbled paper during a one hour session at the Atelier du Livre at the foot of the Medieval Cité.

Afternoon

Visit the Bastide Saint-Louis with Taste of Carca! A two and a half hour tour with gourmet stops in the town's delicatessens and wine merchants.

Enjoy the calm of the open on the Sentier des vignes!
Leaving from the Domaine de Garille between Pennautier and Aragon, just 10 minutes from Carcassonne: a 3 - 4.5 kilometre signposted walk.

15 kilometres – €33 average budget per person, not including meals

Second day

Morning

Drive to Cabrespine, 30 km from Carcassonne to discover the Gouffre Géant, a 45 minute visit in one of the most beautiful caves in Europe!
For a unique experience, try the glass footbridge, suspended 200 metres above the cave floor. After your visit, you could follow one of the tracks to discover the geological trail or the Truffle Belvedere.

Higher in the Montagne Noire... meet the Castans llamas: guided tours explaining the care and breeding or a mini hike in the forest. You will learn how to lead the animal, and have a better understanding of the botany and renewable energy.

®Balades Occitanes

Have a break for a picnic at the Pradelles-Cabardès lake, enjoy the calm and the beautiful landscape as you eat.

Afternoon

For an impressive view and a breathtaking panorama, head for the Pic de Nore, the highest point in the Montagne Noire at 1211m.

South of Carcassonne, go horse riding or on a 'wine' walk in the Val de Dagne, from Montlaur with the Ferme Equestre du Plô through the heart of the Corbières countryside. When you get back, there's a wine tasting!
