Regarding
During the famous show Le Grand Échiquier by Jacques Chancel, Michel Plasson presented him as the Pablo Casals of the tuba. Stéphane Labeyrie has an exceptional musical background. Native of Gers, he studies tuba in Toulouse with Marc Ursule. Barely holding his first prize, he finished his studies at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique de Lyon in the class of Mel Culbertson, another tuba prodigy. Despite his young age, and thanks to his amazing musicality, he is invited to the International Tuba Congress in Chicago. First Prize in several International Competitions in Germany, Australia and Italy, his professional ascension brought him from Toulouse to the Orchestre de Paris, where he entered as a solo tuba in 1998, at the age of 22.
«Véloce, lyric, virtuoso» are the qualities he finds in his instrument, whose range is the most extensive and the most serious sonority of the brass family. In the musical program that Stéphane presents, the tuba takes the place of singing by interpreting melodies or lieder. The works originally accompanied by a piano, are tonight by a string quintet, a version specially written for the recording of an opus.
